Debrecen Waterworks Asks Pedestrians Not to Use Closed Zebra Crossing on Petőfi Square
As previously announced, temporary traffic arrangements have been introduced at the junction of Erzsébet Street and Petőfi Square due to water pipeline junction construction works. Several lanes have been closed at the intersection, meaning that vehicles travelling from Erzsébet Street towards Piac Street may temporarily turn left only from the middle lane normally used for going straight ahead. Likewise, vehicles turning left from Piac Street may also do so only from the straight-ahead lane. The temporary traffic restrictions also affect pedestrians: the zebra crossing on Erzsébet Street has been closed for the duration of the works.
Debrecen Waterworks has now stated that, based on experiences from recent days, a number of people have unfortunately been attempting to use the closed pedestrian crossing by walking through the installed barriers.
They emphasised that this behaviour is not only against the rules but also poses a significantly increased risk of accidents.
Road users are therefore asked, for their own safety and that of others, to observe the temporary traffic management signs and, when travelling on foot, to use the pedestrian underpass at Petőfi Square.
The Waterworks company also stated that the actual works will begin on Wednesday; until now, the new traffic arrangement has been tested using DKV public transport services. The works, and therefore the associated closures, are expected to remain in place until 5 June.
