Debrecen Zoo received tremendous help during the heatwave
The zoo’s pets happily eat the donated melon. A greengrocer in Debrecen donated a large amount of summer treats to the park. The watermelons will contribute to the heat wave feeding for a week.
A greengrocer in Debrecen contacted the city’s animal welfare officer to help find a place for the huge amount of melons. This is how the donation ended up at the zoo.
“It is becoming clear that sometimes you don’t even have to seek help, as helpers will come forward on their own. I hope that sooner or later the message we are trying to convey to the community about animal welfare and responsible pet ownership will get through, that we should pay attention to each other and help if we can,” animal welfare officer Edina Szilágyi said.
After unpacking, most of the melons were put in storage, but some pieces were immediately cut up. The tapirs and capybaras were very happy with the sweet, juicy snack. Of course, many other animals will also get a portion of the one and a half tons of melon.
“We are extremely happy with every offering of feed. We calibrate with our colleagues that this is enough for these animals for more than a week,” director of Zoo Debrecen Zoltán Váradi emphasised.
In addition to the juicy feed, the caretakers are also protecting the zoo’s residents with shade, fresh drinking water, and opportunities to splash around in the coming heatwave days.
