Debrecen’s Citywide Sports Concept Is Moving Forward
Debrecen is preparing a new sports concept that will determine the long-term direction of the city’s sports life.
The local government is involving both residents and sports organizations in the planning process through questionnaires, seeking the opinions and experiences of the people of Debrecen. The deadline for completion is March 31, 2026.
The Municipality of Debrecen regards sport as a strategic sector, given its significant economic, social, and community‑building impact on the city. The previous sports strategy was adopted by the General Assembly in 2000. Since then, extensive legal, economic, and social changes—along with the city’s dynamic development—have made it necessary to create a new, modernized framework.
To develop a new sports concept, four working committees have been established, covering the full spectrum of Debrecen’s sports life: from elite sports through youth development and recreational sports to school sports, university sports, as well as the world of sports events and facilities. Professional work is mentored by András Becsky, Managing Director of Debreceni Sportcentrum Nonprofit Ltd., the process is supervised by EDC Debrecen Nonprofit Ltd., and coordination is carried out by the Cultural Department of the Mayor’s Office.
As the first step in laying the foundations of the strategy, a comprehensive data collection is being launched. As part of this, questionnaires have been prepared for sports organizations, as well as a public questionnaire that assesses the sporting habits and needs of esidents. The municipality’s goal is for as many people as possible to share their opinions, as the new concept is intended for the entire community of the city.
The public questionnaires can be completed online and anonymously at www.debrecen.hu via the pop‑up window on the homepage. Those who prefer the paper format can fill out the printed questionnaires available in the customer service area of the New City Hall, as well as at the Debrecen Sports Swimming Pool and the Debrecen Ice Rink.
The deadline for completing the forms is March 31, 2026. Further information can be requested from the Cultural Department of the Mayor’s Office by phone at +36 52 517 882, or by email at sport@ph.debrecen.hu.
One of the key objectives of the new sports strategy is the creation of a map‑based sports registry that will help residents easily locate local sporting opportunities, disciplines, and venues. To support this, the municipality is also seeking the cooperation of sports service providers.
The future of sport in Debrecen is a shared responsibility, and the city is counting on the opinions of its residents.
