Debrecen’s debut Ice Flower Carnival was a great success
A winterized flower float, more than 120 dancers, and seasonal music drew thousands of spectators to Debrecen’s city center for the first Ice Flower Carnival, which proved to be a spectacular success.
Unlike the traditional August Flower Carnival, where polystyrene figures are easier to carve, the Ice Flower Carnival featured sculptures made from large, high‑pressure frozen ice blocks, requiring hours of work to complete.
The Zichy Youth Brass Band also joined the parade, adjusting their performance to the chilly atmosphere. “We tried to create a unique mood with design and appearance. We prepared arrangements that no other band could play,” highlighted conductor Imre Kerekes.
Crowds of several thousand followed the colorful procession. Many had seen the summer parade before, but this winter version surprised them with its novelty.
Debrecen’s Advent Fair was recently ranked the fifth most beautiful in Europe, and organizers emphasized that renewal is just as important as tradition. This led to the idea of creating a “winter sibling” to the Flower Carnival.
“We didn’t just want new decorations on the main square or the bridge, but also a new program element. That’s how the idea of the Ice Flower Carnival was born. The Flower Carnival has a long tradition in Debrecen, and now we are testing how its winter version works,” explained Zita Dobos, director of Főnix Event Organizer.
The debut Ice Flower Carnival was a resounding success, and organizers confirmed that locals and visitors alike can expect to see it return in the coming years.
