Debrecen’s Northern Bypass Narrows to Two Lanes Along a Three‑Kilometre Stretch

The construction of the extension of Domokos Márton Road has reached a new phase. The first section of Domokos Márton Road was completed as a municipal investment by January 2020, between Balmazújvárosi Road (Main Road 33) and the eastern end of Vezér Street. The road is 1.1 kilometres long, with two lanes and a width of more than 3 metres. As part of the investment, street lighting was installed and drainage infrastructure was also completed. Even at that time plans were in place, followed by an agreement between the municipality and the government, to extend the road from its current endpoint to Main Road 354, i.e. the northern bypass of Debrecen, using state funding.

A new 2×1 lane road section, approximately 1.5 kilometres long, is being built between Main Road 354 and Vezér Street, which will connect to Main Road 354 via a grade-separated junction.

Duna Aszfalt Zrt. has announced that, in order to carry out demolition, earthworks and road structure construction, as well as subsequent bridge construction works, it is necessary to reintroduce the temporary traffic restriction previously applied and proven effective during the construction of the central support of the bridge on Main Road 354.

Between kilometre sections 1+700 and 3+100, the 2×2 lane main road will be reduced to 2×1 lanes.

In practice, this means that traffic will remain open in both directions without any traffic light restrictions, but instead of the current two lanes per direction, only one lane will be available.

The restriction will be in force from 16 March until approximately mid-September.

The lifting of the bridge girders for the structure over Main Road 354 is expected to take place in the first half of April, depending on weather conditions. During the lifting of the girders, the construction of scaffolding and the necessary specialist works, temporary partial road closures are expected under police traffic control. The affected work is expected to take approximately two days per phase. Traffic stoppages are expected during working hours, following a schedule of 10–15 minutes of stoppage followed by 20 minutes of traffic flow.

The new road may relieve several heavily trafficked routes, for example reducing traffic on Balmazújvárosi Road and Vezér Street, and it may also serve as an alternative to Böszörményi Road.

“If the entire road is completed, it will be an obvious route for those travelling from the north towards the central or southern parts of the city, and, running parallel to Böszörményi Road, it will also be able to fulfil a significant traffic-relieving function,” said Mayor László Papp previously.

In addition, new road connections will be built to the facilities of major companies such as BMW, ThyssenKrupp and EVE Power.

The road is being constructed using state funding at a total gross cost of HUF 8.25 billion.
