Dermatological research by experts at the University of Debrecen receives award
The recognition that the defense system of healthy skin differs significantly in different skin regions may contribute to the more effective treatment of certain inflammatory skin diseases and the development of more effective skin care products.
As unideb.hu reports, dermatological research by experts from the University of Debrecen awarded researchers from the University of Debrecen published their results on the topic in the prestigious international journal Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology. The outstanding scientific work won the Publication Award of the Gróf Tisza István Foundation for the University of Debrecen and the University of Debrecen.
The work of the research group highlights that our skin is not a homogeneous surface. As a barrier organ, the skin performs a complex protective function against harmful external physical, chemical, and microbial effects.
This complex function is built up by four main elements: chemical, microbial, physical (permeability), and immunological barriers, which closely cooperate to perform the protective function of the skin. Damage to any of them can lead to the development of inflammatory skin diseases.
The researchers of the department, who have been working on the topic for about ten years, have significantly contributed to the discovery of regional differences in these barrier elements. They were the first to describe regional differences in the skin’s immunological barrier and also significantly expanded the knowledge about the regionality of the permeability barrier.
“Our skin is not uniform; individual skin regions have different barrier characteristics. These regional barrier differences may explain why certain region-specific skin diseases always develop in a given skin area.
This recognition is of great importance, as by understanding these regional differences, we can develop targeted local dermatological treatments for certain inflammatory skin diseases that are not only more effective but can also result in longer-lasting healing,” Zsolt Dajnoki, a scientific associate at the Department of Dermatology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Debrecen, told hirek.unideb.hu.
The significance of the publication is also confirmed by the fact that its main illustration was placed on the cover of the journal, a short commentary was published in connection with the article, and the editor-in-chief also announced the article in a short video.
