Deszka Festival Welcomes Performers from Budapest, Szeged, and Cluj-Napoca
This year, the celebration of contemporary Hungarian drama—the Deszka Festival—will be held in Debrecen between February 24 and March 1.
Deputy Mayor István Puskás emphasized that the Deszka Festival will once again serve as a key meeting point for everyone committed to contemporary Hungarian drama. He added that this program series contributes significantly not only to the cultural life of Debrecen, but also to that of the entire country.
Dániel Vadász, Director of the Csokonai National Theatre, noted that, as in previous years, theatre companies from several cities will participate in the 26th Deszka Festival. Artists will arrive from Budapest, Szeged, and Cluj‑Napoca, among others, all presenting contemporary dramas that hold a uniquely important place in today’s cultural landscape.
“They reach young people very quickly, whether through books or adaptations. That is precisely why we consider it important that within the theatre these literary characters and works should not appear only on stage, but that we also try to organize conversations and forums in theatrical spaces where literary figures and theatre practitioners can discuss a given work in live conversations,” he said.
