Development of Vámospércsi Road – Hétvezér Street – Budai Nagy Antal Street Junction to Be Completed by Start of School Year

All three major Debrecen junctions rebuilt in recent years will be fully operational by the start of the school year. Following the Szoboszlói Road – Külsővásártér and Füredi Road – Csigekert Street – Szabó Lőrinc Street junctions, the development of the Vámospércsi Road – Hétvezér Street – Budai Nagy Antal Street junction will also be completed by the end of August. The investments completed so far have performed well, significantly increasing the capacity of the junctions.

Mayor László Papp said at a press conference today that, over the past little more than two years, three major high-traffic junctions in Debrecen have been reconstructed, each carrying tens of thousands of vehicles every day. At the Vámospércsi Road – Hétvezér Street – Budai Nagy Antal Street junction alone, around 33,000 to 35,000 passenger-car units pass through each day, meaning that it had already become a bottleneck for traffic arriving from the eastern part of the city and from the direction of Vámospércs.

The mayor stressed that the developments were designed not merely to handle current traffic levels, but to create junctions capable of adequately serving Debrecen’s transport needs over the next 10 to 20 years as well. Experience so far shows that this objective has been achieved. The Szoboszlói Road – Külsővásártér and Füredi Road – Csigekert Street – Szabó Lőrinc Street junctions are both coping well with heavy traffic thanks to their increased capacity. According to László Papp, the first experience at the Vámospércsi Road junction points in the same direction.

The project is currently around 95 per cent complete, with the traffic lights undergoing trial operation and fine-tuning. By 31 August, the contractor will remove the temporary traffic-control measures, meaning that from 1 September the junction will be fully operational for road users. In September, only landscaping and planting works will remain.

László Papp thanked the government for its support, as the development of all three major junctions was carried out as a state-funded investment. He also thanked local residents and road users for their patience, stressing that rebuilding a junction carrying tens of thousands of vehicles a day cannot be carried out without causing some temporary inconvenience.

At the same time, the mayor said that Debrecen’s transport development programme would not end there. The new connection between Main Road 354 and Vezér Street could be completed by the end of the year, which could significantly reduce traffic on both Böszörményi Road and Vezér Street. The public procurement procedure for the next major junction development planned at Rakovszky Street – Ótemető Street has been completed, but government funding still needs to be secured before the investment can begin. László Papp expressed his confidence that this important project for the city could also go ahead.

A key task in the coming period will be to continue extending the inner transport corridor, as well as to continue preparations for the outer eastern bypass. The latter already has environmental approval, so according to the mayor, it is now up to the government to take the next step and launch the public procurement process for the preparation of the detailed design and construction plans.

Viktor Papp, city councillor for the district, said that one of the major beneficiaries of Debrecen’s transport developments in recent years had been the eastern part of the city. The renovation of Sámsoni Road, the reconstruction of the Vámospércsi Road junction, road improvements in residential areas and the planned eastern inner transport corridor all serve this purpose. Regarding the latter, he highlighted that it would make everyday travel safer and easier for people living in the area. He added that preparations were also under way for further investments that could improve the quality of life for residents of the eastern part of the city. One example is the planned renewal of Létai Road and Lahner Street. In the case of Létai Road, he also highlighted the development of cycling infrastructure in line with residents’ needs.
