Developments to ease traffic congestion in Debrecen have been implemented in the Northwest Economic Zone
The transport development of Debrecen and its surroundings has reached another milestone. On Thursday, the Debrecen-Fatér station in the Northwest Economic Zone and the newly completed additional facility of the Macs Industrial Park Terminal were inaugurated.
Eight tracks, almost 13 kilometers of overhead lines and 10 shunting groups were built at Fatér station. The investment was implemented from domestic sources, HUF 11.6 billion.
The industrial terminal facility, which also includes an office building and a road access and control system, cost an additional HUF 2.1 billion.
Deputy State Secretary József Pántya said at the ceremony that one of the defining elements of the Hungarian economy is the automotive industry. In addition to the manufacturers and plants that have found a home in the country, the flagships of the industry are the car factories, BMW or BYD. There are very high hopes for these factories, but in order for them to be fulfilled, the Hungarian state must implement numerous investments.
“Significant railway investments have been completed in the past two years due to the investments taking place in the region, and will be completed in the next year or two and a half. The amount of these exceeds 118 billion forints. The aim of the investments is therefore not only to support BMW but also to increase the daily competitiveness of the region, the city, and the economic potential found here,” he explained.
Member of Parliament Lajos Kósa believes that these will relieve traffic loads from the city’s internal transport system, pointing out that it is important to note that the commissioning of the BMW factory will increase traffic by thousands of vehicle movements. If this were to burden public roads alone, no highway development could solve the problem, which is why railway development is necessary.
Mayor László Papp spoke at the ceremonial handover that the Debrecen Northwest Economic Zone is one of the most stable engines of the future development of the Hungarian economy and one of the most important developments in Hungarian economic history.
He highlighted that Debrecen is on the verge of a transport era change in terms of transport development. In recent years, many world-class industrial players have decided to bring their manufacturing, development, and logistics activities to Debrecen. The presence of BMW and its related suppliers has opened a new dimension for the city.
“The production that will start in the coming period will result not only in jobs, but also in a growing population, and the impact of everything that we see around us now will be felt not only in Debrecen, but also in the agglomeration,” he underlined.
The Northwest Economic Zone, located on an area of 500 hectares, is just one of the large industrial areas of Debrecen; in addition, the BMW factory covers 400 hectares, the related supplier park covers 100 hectares, and there is a 710-hectare industrial area on the southern side of the city.
It was mentioned at the event that the logistical service of these two huge industrial areas was a special challenge for the city government.
“When the development of this area started, the location of the railway logistics had to be solved in cooperation with the Hungarian government and the Ministry of Construction and Transport. The city played a role in the development and acquisition of the area, and the Hungarian government played a role in its development,” László Papp revealed.
Thanks to this, one of the largest railway logistics terminals in Eastern Hungary was created in the Northwestern Economic Zone.
On the one hand, this can serve the transport of vehicles manufactured at the BMW factory, and on the other hand, the railway logistics of the entire Eastern Hungarian industry, thereby relieving Debrecen’s internal road network.
Finally, the mayor of Debrecen also envisioned a road logistics terminal, which will represent a new base for truck traffic and road freight transport outside the city. The public procurement notice for its construction works was recently published.
