Discussions held at the University of Debrecen on launching a Chinese Language Major
A delegation from the Beijing Centre for Language Education and Cooperation, Ministry of Education of China, discussed the possibility of establishing the Chinese language as a core subject at the University of Debrecen on Thursday with the institution’s leadership and the Faculty of Humanities.
The Centre’s responsibilities include founding and supporting Confucius Institutes worldwide, as well as exploring and implementing opportunities to establish Chinese language majors at foreign universities.
Led by Director General Yu Yunfeng, the delegation first toured the university’s Main Building and attended the graduation ceremony of the Faculty of Science and Technology.
The Chinese guests—including representatives from EVE Power Hungary, SEMCORP Hungary, and CATL—were welcomed in the Rector’s Council Chamber by Vice Rector Károly Pető, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities Róbert Keményfi, Director of Coordination and Strategy of the University of Debrecen Okszána Kiszil, and the Hungarian and Chinese directors of the Confucius Institute.
The delegation received an overview of the university’s educational and research activities, its academic programs, and achievements in Chinese language and cultural education. They also reviewed the potential for launching a Chinese language major at the University of Debrecen.
“This initiative would expand the already popular Chinese language education available to all members of the university—Hungarian and international students alike—and enrich the Faculty of Humanities’ diverse language offerings with a program that is considered a rarity in Hungarian higher education,” Dean Róbert Keményfi told the university’s media platform following the meeting.
He highlighted that nearly a thousand students have already studied Chinese at the university.
After the meeting, the guests visited the Faculty of Humanities, where they held professional discussions with the directors of the Confucius Institute—Hungarian director Pál Csontos and Chinese director Cui Xianjun—as well as members of the Hungarian and Chinese teaching staff.
