Discussions on changes to the municipal system have begun
The mayor of Debrecen and the Association of Cities with County Rights are calling for several changes.
In the autumn, based on requests and proposals from various local government associations, the government decided to give Tibor Navracsics, Minister of Public Administration and Regional Development, a mandate to begin negotiations on “a fine-tuning of the local government system to be implemented in the medium term.”
The government will start the talks with local government associations, then will consult with mayors, local MPs, county assembly chairs, and members of county representative bodies.
The first talks were held on Tuesday with representatives of the National Association of Local Governments, followed by the Association of Hungarian Local Governments.
“Our goal is to develop a comprehensive package of amendment proposals that is acceptable to both local government and government stakeholders,” Tibor Navracsics wrote on his Facebook page.
László Papp, mayor of Debrecen, and the Association of Cities with County Rights (of which Debrecen is also a member) have also put forward proposals for changes to solidarity contributions and the Competitive Districts Programme among others.
