Dodgeball Now Part of Move, Debrecen! School Programme
On 28 April 2026, teams of 6 to 10 Year 5–6 pupils from 6 participating primary schools had the opportunity to try their hand at dodgeball at Szoboszlói Street Primary School in the Move, Debrecen! school programme.
At the opening ceremony of the event entitled the “1st Move with Szoboszlói! Dodgeball Cup,” Deputy Mayor Diána Széles welcomed the participating children. As she noted, among other things, this was a historic moment, as no dodgeball sporting event had previously been organised as part of the Move, Debrecen! school programme, and therefore thanks are due to everyone who contributed to making this occasion possible. Dodgeball follows similar basic principles to kiütő but differs from it in having strict rules, and it is played internationally, with even world championships being held. The Move, Debrecen! school programme aims to engage with this fast-paced, varied and exciting sport—which also offers eliminated players the chance to return to play—and to introduce it to pupils in any school interested in it.
As a token of appreciation for organising the tournament, the Deputy Mayor presented symbolic gifts on behalf of the Move, Debrecen! initiative to Orsolya Nyéki Kammererné, headteacher of Szoboszlói Street Primary School, Máté Vas, deputy headteacher, and Ferenc Vass, head of Dodgeball Debrecen.
In connection with the event, Diána Széles also stated that the Move, Debrecen! initiative welcomes suggestions and proposals regarding how to expand the range of its physical activity programmes. Following the success of the programme’s kiütő championship, dodgeball practitioners approached Move, Debrecen! with recommendations of dodgeball as a serious sport popular at international level. This led to the organisation of the present tournament, where children participating in the school programme who are not registered athletes can discover a form of physical activity they enjoy in dodgeball, which is also played in Debrecen. Diána Széles emphasised that the primary aim of the Move, Debrecen! school programme is to draw children away from the digital world into sporting community activities, bringing positive experiences and happiness into the lives of pupils in Debrecen.
The organisers believe that shared sporting experiences help shape teams into genuinely cohesive communities, which can then compete for their schools in various competitions.
