Drinking water distribution in the city centre of Debrecen during the heat alert
The national chief medical officer has issued a third-degree heat alert for the entire country from 12:00 a.m. on July 24, 2025 (Thursday), until 12:00 a.m. on July 26, 2025 (Saturday).
During the third-degree heat alert, the Municipality of Debrecen is again helping city residents by distributing drinking water and operating vapour gates. Between July 24 and 26, volunteers from the Charity Board will distribute water at two downtown locations, and cooling and humidifying equipment will also be operating at several locations. The city advises residents to maintain adequate fluid intake, with a particular focus on children and the elderly.
Given the third-degree heat alert, the Municipality of Debrecen is organising drinking water distribution at two frequented points in the city centre between July 24 and 26, on weekdays between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Volunteers from the Debrecen Charity Board are participating in the water distribution, distributing water at the intersection of Hatvan Street and Kossuth Square (in front of Nap Pharmacy) and at the corner of Csapó Street and Dósa nádor Square.
During the summer heat waves, prevention is critical, which is why the city of Debrecen is not only distributing water but also operating vapour gates at several points to relieve the heat. The humidifiers have been operating for weeks at Kossuth Square, Csapó Street, the Csonkatemplom (Reformed Small Church) in Tócóskert, Angyalföld Square, and the Víztorony Promenade.
To alleviate the heat, increased care is also being taken to irrigate the city’s green areas. Public green areas are watered at dawn or late at night, and special attention is paid to the operation of automatic irrigation systems. Public drinking fountains and fountains are also operating continuously, helping to refresh.
The Municipality of Debrecen asks its residents to pay special attention to children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with cardiovascular diseases. It is imperative that no one leaves home without water, and we should not forget about pets: we should also provide them with enough fresh drinking water on hot days.
