EcoPro Debrecen Shifts to Greener Operations
EcoPro BM Hungary Zrt. is enhancing the operation of its Debrecen plant through technological innovation and increased environmental awareness, having initiated the third amendment to its Integrated Environmental Permit (EKHE). The aim of the investment is to make the company’s manufacturing processes even more sustainable and efficient, while reducing environmental impact, the company said in a statement.
The South Korean EcoPro – a key player in the cathode material manufacturing market and a major supplier to the global electric vehicle industry – launched the permit amendment procedure relating to Debrecen on 22 April 2026.
The objective is to prepare for the production of a new type of cathode active material, which is planned to be introduced from the summer of 2026 in the NCA1 production unit, using more advanced technological solutions.
The Safety Report related to the amendment has already been approved, concluding that the planned changes do not pose any additional industrial safety risks. The procedure therefore primarily aims to clarify compliance with environmental protection requirements.
The amendment of the EKHE covers not only the production of the new product but also includes further technical developments. These include the installation of new separation equipment, the establishment of new point emission sources and a detailed presentation of their environmental impacts, as well as updates to air quality protection and noise protection impact zones.
As stated, the company places particular emphasis on minimising environmental impact: emissions are monitored using modern control systems, while measurements are carried out by an independent, accredited specialist firm to verify compliance with limit values.
The documentation also records actual operational parameters, comparing previous plans with the realised state.
As part of the developments, new technological steps will also be introduced in the LHM plant to increase the efficiency of lithium recycling. This contributes to reducing raw material use, lowering waste generation and improving resource efficiency, in line with the principles of the circular economy and the company’s ESG objectives.
“These developments not only serve to reduce our environmental footprint but also strengthen our commitment to long-term community value creation in the region,” emphasised Dr Aladár Kuun, the company’s Legal and External Affairs Manager.
The documentation also outlines plans for a fire station expected to be completed by autumn this year, which will enhance the operational safety of the site, strengthen employee protection and enable rapid response in emergency situations.
The permit amendment procedure forms part of transparent operations based on cooperation with the authorities. EcoPro BM Hungary Zrt. emphasised that it will continue to give priority to ensuring that its activities comply with all environmental, industrial safety and occupational safety regulations.
