Enrollment Opens for Future First‑Graders across 23 Schools in Debrecen

Parents of future first‑grade students can submit primary school applications until 26 February 2026.

First‑grade students at Epreskerti Primary School are practicing their reading skills. Starting in September, a total of 52 new first‑graders will begin their studies here. The school places strong emphasis on advanced IT education, while foreign‑language instruction also starts from the first grade. ‘When children enroll, they can choose between two languages. I am very pleased about this, as there is clearly a strong demand for German in the city. Accordingly, we offer both English and German at our institution,’ principal Csilla Enikő Fórián Gondáné emphasized.

A child becomes of compulsory school age in September if they turn six by August 31. Parents of prospective first‑graders have until February 26 to submit the application form to their first‑choice institution, either online, by post, or in person. Up to three schools may be listed on the form. The application form is available for download at debrecen.hu and on the websites of all schools.

In Debrecen, 23 school district institutions are welcoming prospective students. ‘We currently have more than 50 first‑grade classes and nearly 1,300 young first‑graders enrolled across all primary schools. We hope to see similarly strong numbers from September,’ László Türk, director of the Debrecen School District Center, emphasized.

Deputy Mayor Lajos Barcsa emphasized that education has always been a strategic priority for the city. Debrecen’s primary and secondary schools consistently rank among the best nationwide, and its university offers world‑class training. “Debrecen’s education system provides families with a complete learning and career pathway, ensuring that no one needs to leave the city to access high‑quality education—they can receive the best and build a successful future right here,” the deputy mayor summarized.

The next important deadline is April 23 and 24, when enrollment will take place.
