Europe’s Battery Industry Needs to Align Research, Investment and Environmental Requirements for Growth, Experts Say in Debrecen

Europe is placing increasing emphasis on domestic battery manufacturing, creating new opportunities for Hungary too. Experts attending Hungarian Battery Days in Debrecen say that, to achieve this, support must be provided both for bringing new ideas to market and for meeting environmental requirements.

Growing demand for electric cars is creating new opportunities for Europe’s battery industry, as discussed on the opening day of the Hungarian Battery Days held in Debrecen on 4 and 5 November. “Growing demand for electric vehicles represents a major opportunity for Hungary and Europe as a whole. Europe increasingly wants to rely on its own manufacturing capacity, so meeting rising demand through local production offers considerable potential for both,” said Oskaras Alsauskas, energy modeller at the International Energy Agency.

Technological developments must also make their way to market – a process in which the European Battery Alliance actively supports start-ups through, for instance, a dedicated forum organised this May to bring start-ups together with potential investors. “We sought to focus on start-ups that are trying to take innovations into the later stages of development. One way we did this was by bringing people together. As an alliance, we do not have the financial resources to invest in innovations ourselves, but we do have the contacts needed to connect the right people,” said Timothée Perruchoud, a representative of the European Battery Alliance.

Different battery technologies are subject to different environmental requirements. Regulatory authorities must take into account both the chemical composition of batteries and the supply chain in the country concerned, which can make it difficult to define the requirements precisely. A reference document produced by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre is designed to help address this challenge. “We have a document designed to bring all this information together in one place. Hopefully, it will make the work of those developing permitting procedures considerably easier and help them find the information they need,” said Diogo B. Moniz, a project officer at the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre.

According to the experts, the development of Europe’s battery industry requires research, investment and environmental requirements to be brought into alignment.
