Downtown DebrecenOn the occasion of the International Dance Day, the National Association of Dance Educators and the Hungarian Dance University are once again the 8th Great Dance Selection.
As part of the nationwide series of events, dance lovers—and those who would like to discover this wonderful form of movement—are also welcome in Debrecen, according to the organisers’ announcement on Tuesday. The Debrecen programme has been realised through the cooperation of the Modern Tánc-Játék Stúdió and the Főnix Rendezvényszervező, with the support of the municipality of Debrecen.
29 April is marked worldwide as a celebration of dance: International Dance Day was established in 1982 by the UNESCO International Theatre Institute to highlight the universal language of dance and its power to build communities.
The date is no coincidence: it marks the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre, one of the pioneers of modern ballet. His work demonstrates that dance is not merely an art form, but a means of expression capable of telling stories without words.
Both the Great Dance Selection and International Dance Day aim to bring dance closer to everyone—whether it be classical ballet, folk dance or modern styles.
The programme also shows that, following last year’s success, the 2nd Dance Week will again be held in Debrecen.
The 2nd Debrecen Dance Week will begin with a dynamic opening: on 25–26 April, the Dance of the Year competition will take place at VOKE Cultural Centre. During the two-day event, dancers from multiple age groups will take to the stage, representing a wide range of genres from classical to modern and contemporary styles.
The city’s multi-day programme series is also linked to International Dance Day, and the Csokonai National Theatre has already announced its first workshop connected to the Dance Week, organised by the Gradient Contemporary Ballet, the theatre’s contemporary dance company.
According to the event description, the bilingual (English–Hungarian) workshop is open to everyone who would like to experience how movement can become a tool for attention, self-awareness and expression. No prior dance experience is required—only curiosity and comfortable clothing.
More information about the Debrecen programmes is available on the event’s Facebook page.
