About the Piece:
Haydn’s oratorio The Creation is a universally acclaimed masterpiece, blending Baroque traditions with Classical innovations. Influenced by his travels in London, Haydn learned about English oratorio traditions, particularly Handel’s works. The libretto, written by Baron Gottfried van Swieten, was based on English-language sources but later translated into German. The oratorio, premiered in Vienna in 1798, is divided into three parts: the first four days of creation, the creation of animals and man, Adam and Eve, and the happy life of Adam and Eve before the Fall. The work features three soloists, Gabriel, Uriel, and Raphael, and a detailed orchestration that imitates bird calls, thunder, and water movement.
