About the Kodály Choir and the anniversary concert:
The Kodály Choir of Debrecen was founded in 1955 by conductor and music educator György Gulyás. Initially formed as the choir of the School of Music Arts, it has since become a defining presence in the musical life of both the city and the country.
The anniversary concert offers a rich selection of choral masterpieces: Renaissance psalms by Palestrina and contemporary settings of the same text by Lorenzo Donati, Bach’s captivating motet of praise, and Knut Nystedt’s modern yet timeless paraphrase—all presenting a harmonious dialogue between past and present. Following the moving works of Brahms and Kodály, the dramatic Csodafiú-szarvas by Miklós Kocsár and compositions by living composers Miklós Csemiczky and Ko Matsushita showcase the choir’s artistic diversity.
All of this will be performed within the historic walls of the Reformed Great Church, under the direction of chief conductor Zoltán Kocsis-Holper, with organ accompaniment by the choir’s permanent répétiteur, Olga Vojevogyina.
