The 29th National Goulash Competition and Shepherds’ Gathering will take place this weekend on September 13 at the Pusztai Zoo in Hortobágy, following its postponement in May due to foot-and-mouth disease.
This year’s event will be held in conjunction with the 18th Meeting of Hortobágy Shepherds and Hungarian Traditional Shepherd Dog Handlers, offering visitors a unique opportunity to experience two major cultural gatherings simultaneously.
The program features traditional competitions reflecting the everyday tasks of shepherds, including:
- Cattle catching
- Water pulling
- Lasso throwing
- Goulash stick and whip handling
The event culminates in a festive celebration shared by participants and attendees.
Visitors can explore the Pusztai Animal Park, located just 1.5 km from the iconic Nine-Hole Bridge, where they can enjoy a vibrant folk art fair and sample authentic shepherd dishes. The park also showcases traditional livestock buildings and many old Hungarian animal breeds.
