The name Anton Arensky may sound unfamiliar to many, yet in his homeland he is regarded as an outstanding teacher, pianist, and composer. His late Romantic style shows greater similarities with the music of Tchaikovsky than with that of his teacher, Rimsky-Korsakov. Among his works, his chamber and symphonic compositions stand out, but he also wrote several hundred piano pieces, including numerous suites for two pianos.
At the concert, in addition to his piano music, one of his most beautiful and best-known works will be featured: his Trio in D minor, which he dedicated to the renowned cellist of his time, Karl Davydov. Although he did not leave as deep a mark on music history as a composer, among his students were such talents who became defining figures of classical music as Rachmaninoff and Scriabin.
