Full-dome Films in English in Agora

Full-dome films are offered in English to the visitors of the Science Centre. Agora Science Centre has one of the largest portable digital planetariums in Hungary that enables visitors to surf in the starry sky, discover the motion of celestial bodies, and familiarise themselves with constellations. It guarantees a lifelong experience for both children and adults. Full-dome films available in English are the following: Europe to the Stars - from 4.00  p.m. every Thursday and Saturday. The Sun, Our Living Star - from 4.00 p.m. every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday. Participation is possible with the Agora entry ticket. The planetarium has a capacity of 40 people. Thus, visitors can participate in these programs with a limited number, in order of arrival. Further information about the films can be found here. New Public Collection Exhibition of MODEM titled “What year are you?” opened

The new public collection exhibition, with around 50 different artists presented from the founders to Generation Z marking a new chapter for MODEM, can be visited until the 31st of December 2024. The curators of the exhibition have chosen artists who have shaped MODEM's image over the years, showcasing works from a collection that has evolved over 18 years, incorporating collections, acquisitions, Debrecen International Artists' Colony results, and artist donations. Exhibition by Impressionist Painter Opens in Egri Borbarát Gallery

An exhibition of paintings by  teacher and agricultural engineer György János Adamik entitled “The Dream of a Lightsmith” opens on the 2nd of May at 6:00 p.m. at  Egri Borbarát Gallery in Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Street, Debrecen. This is not the first time that the artist, who considers himself an impressionist painter, has exhibited here; he paints in nature, but his paintings are not intended to depict only the visible world. The exhibition opened by cultural organiser Szilárd Tömöri  is on view until the 3rd of June. Photo Exhibition on the Wonders of Debrecen Opens on the 14th of May

Csapókert Community Center Süveg Street 3, Debrecen, Hungary

Péter Károlyi is preparing for his first solo exhibition, which will open at DEMKI Csapókerti Community Centre on the 14th of May at 5.00 p.m. Deputy Mayor István Puskás and municipality representative of the Csapókert Edina Szilágyi will give a welcome speech at the event. The exhibition will be opened by photographer Márton Fejes, with the participation of university student Lizett Kunvári. Péter Károlyi  sees Debrecen as a very good mix of modern and classical styles, creating a unique cityscape and atmosphere. Exhibition Titled Answers Without a Question of Kristóf József Balogh at MODEM

Kristóf József Balogh is an artist born in Debrecen, currently living and working in Budapest. His first institutional solo exhibition will take place in the newly opened Project Space at the MODEM Centre for Modern and Contemporary Art. Although the painterly qualities may deceive viewers, Balogh actually uses screenshots of mysterious incidents as source material, where one is not quite sure what is happening. This varied visual collection draws on a wide spectrum of references and brings them into play. The artist's new series of anecdotal paintings for the exhibition often make unexpected shifts between cartoon characters, animals and human figures. These shifts can be seen as both references to the fluidity of (self-)identity and as reinforcing the intensity of abstract thinking and storytelling. In many cases, the opaque acrylic images are difficult to relate to each other, which further enhances the logic and narrative structure of their abstract representation. Balogh's aim is not to encourage the viewer to quiet contemplation, but to create a receptive situation in which the viewer can respond directly to images stripped of their original context. Attila Kővári’ s new exhibition at Új Galéria

Painter Attila Kőváry is opening his latest exhibition at Új Galéria in Széchenyi Street, organised by the Debrecen Artists' Guild Association, where he promises to show nature, garden, order and peace through his paintings. The artist admires the beauty, the goodness, the wisdom of the divine order manifested in nature, he stepped out of the twilight of the studio and expanded the space, the materials, the tools of creation. Short Film Screenings at Apolló Cinema

This year, for the first time, rural cinemas will join the Friss Hús (Fresh Flesh) festival for seven days, Apolló Cinema will also be the location of the program. About the festival: In 2024, the Friss Hús Budapest International Short Film Festival will be held for the twelfth time. The primary purpose of Friss Hús is to present the latest Hungarian and foreign short films, as well as to build a professional forum where creators who want feedback and dialogue can show their films to a larger audience. The screenings are usually sold out and generate significant professional and press coverage. The increasing number of visitors to the festival every year proves that short films are of wide interest. In Debrecen, the works of the Hungarian competition film blocks of the festival will be screened for seven days between the 30th of May and the 5th of June at Apolló Cinema. Night of Literature, an Unusual World Literature Tour

The Night of Literature invites you on an extraordinary journey through world literature. Over three nights, actors will read excerpts from 24 authors from 24 countries, in places not necessarily connected to literature, but which will show it in a new light.  This year's theme, to which the selected texts are linked, is the “ Opposite Shore”. For the sixth year running, Debrecen has hosted literary readings in atmospheric downtown venues. The texts, representing the many shades of world literature, are brought to life by the Csokonai National Theatre's theatre artists. The readings will take place in 8 outdoor venues in parallel from 7:00 p.m.  to 9:30 p.m., with a rain venue provided. At each venue, a 10-15 minute excerpt of a particular author's work will be performed, starting at 7:00 p.m, 7:30 p.m, 8:00 p.m., 8:30 p.m., 9:00 p.m. Each venue will offer a taste of literature from different countries on different days. You can plan your own literary itinerary for the day, with the help of a printed map. Participation is free of charge and no pre-registration is required. National Vespa Meeting – Vespas in and around Debrecen

“For the first time in the Eastern region and in Debrecen, the Vespa Club Debrecen Sports Association, founded more than two years ago, will organise the National Vespa Meeting in Hungary in 2024,”  the association announced. The event is attended by Vespa owners, enthusiasts and fans from all over the country and beyond. The scooters will bring the Italian way of life, the dolce vita, on two wheels to Debrecen and its surroundings. The event starts on the 6th of  June at 12.00 p.m. and ends on the 9th of June at 10.00 a.m. The central venue of the meeting will be the Hotel Nagyerdő in Debrecen. The most spectacular part of the event will take place on Saturday morning, on the 8th of  June, when about 200 Vespa bikers will march from the Hotel Nagyerdő, starting at 10.00 a.m. under police escort, through the streets of Debrecen (Egyetem Avenue, Bethlen and Hatvan streets) to Kossuth Square. The motorcyclists will be greeted by Mayor László Papp in front of the Great Church, and then all visitors will be able to admire the most beautiful Italian two-wheelers. Vivaldi 4 Seasons – The Crossover Concert

A fusion of classical music with swing, jazz, Latin and folk music. An exciting attempt to modernise one of the greatest works of the Baroque awaits the audience on the 6th of June at the Faculty of Music of the University of Debrecen. The concert presents the latest exciting musical attempt by band with double gold records Swing à la Django to rework the most popular work of the famous Italian composer and violinist Antonio Vivaldi. The entire piece of Four Seasons has been reworked, moving from movement to movement, the listener is invited on a journey that spans several musical styles. The musicians transform well-known melodies into exciting swing, jazz, Latin and folk sounds and rhythms, Italian, French, Hungarian, Spanish, American melodies and virtuoso improvisations are interwoven. The aim of the experiment is to bring Baroque music closer to the people of today, to make the genius of the old days understandable. Closing Exhibition of Jewish Communities’ Artist Camp

Works created in the art camp will be on display at the exhibition in the Orthodox Synagogue of Pásti Street. For the second time, an art camp was organised by the Jewish Communities and Organisations of Central and Eastern Europe to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Holocaust. “The Debrecen Jewish Quarter is one of the most dynamically developing cultural and religious sacred spaces in the country today. Its role in the culture of Debrecen is indisputable,” says the Debrecen Jewish Community in a statement. Against this background, a new initiative has been announced,  the Debrecen Jewish Quarter Artists' and Artists' Camp will be organised for the first time by the association. The event is by invitation only. Among the artists there are artists from Debrecen, from other parts of the country and from abroad, who are nationally and internationally renowned. During the camp, they not only get to know the Jewish Quarter of Debrecen, but also gain a deep knowledge of Jewish life in the region by visiting local sacred spaces, with the undisguised aim of inspiring them to create.
