Japan-Themed Exhibition Opened in Debrecen

Exhibition titled ‘Tojama, before the earthquake’ opened in the Egri Borbarát (Friends of Wine) Bar Gallery on Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Street on the 11th of January. The colourful exotic landscapes and genre pictures selected by the curator János Tóth are award-winning works by Tojama County photographers. Several of the creators have participated in artist camps in Debrecen and Hajdú-Bihar County over the past decades. The exhibition was opened by István Pinczés, the artistic director of the Tojama Association, and was guided by personal memories. (The Jászai Mari and Uchimura award-winning director visited the landscapes shown in the pictures 70 times in 40 years.) Members of the performing arts section of the Tojama Association also participated in the opening. With the exhibition, on the initiative of the owner István Kovács, the organisers commemorate the victims of the 7.6 magnitude earthquake that struck the west coast of Japan in the first days of the year, when a total of more than 400 earthquakes and aftershocks devastated the region over the course of several days, resulting in nearly 80 deaths. Short Film Evening in Apollo Cinema

The King’s Singers Ensemble Brings Cartoon Musical Classics to Főnix Arena

The popular production, selecting  from the best-known and most popular animated soundtracks to the delight of music and cinema fans, will be presented in Budapest on the 16th of January 16, in Debrecen on the 17th of January at  Főnix Arena and in Szeged on the 18th of January. The King's Singers delved deeply into classic soundtracks, reinterpreting the songs, dressing them in a brand new guise. It is the largest-scale The King's Singers project to date, which includes brand new adaptations of the popular cartoon classics of the past century. The world-renowned ensemble celebrates 100 years of iconic storytelling with a special symphonic orchestra arena tour to bring back the most beautiful memories of childhood through music for all ages, including the popular story in which a princess falls into a deep sleep, from which only true love's kiss can wake her up. Special Exhibition of Debrecen Carver, Sándor Szabó Réti at DEMKI (Tímárház)

  Several of Sándor Szabó Réti's works can be seen  at the exhibition entitled ‘A Tale Woven from Light’. A special world built from wood, colours and Hungarian folk culture will be revealed to those who visit the DEMKI House (Tímárház) between the 18th of January and the 10th of February, 2024. ‘The Day of Hungarian Culture will be on the 22nd of January and I was invited to this exhibition in connection with this. I collected my previous works, which are wooden, carved, painted sets and altars  from various public institutions and private individuals. On the one hand, the colours are the different reflections and refractions of light, and on the other hand, the world of motifs visible in the works is drawn from Hungarian folk tales and their lessons, ’ he said. Among other things, the movable puppet wall of the puppet group Báb-Kincs-Tár from Létavértes and the scenery of the Aranyszalma Folk Dance Ensemble from Hajdúnánás will also be on display at the exhibition. Night of Ice Rinks

Day of Hungarian Culture

January 22nd is the official Day of Hungarian Culture, dedicated to celebrating the written literature and poetry of Hungary, as well as honoring its renowned writers and poets. On this significant day in Hungarian literary history, the famous Hungarian poet Ferenc Kölcsey completed the manuscript of the Hungarian National Anthem in 1823. Since 1989, this date has been observed as a celebration of Hungarian culture, both within Hungary and abroad. The year 2023 marked a special anniversary as it commemorated exactly 200 years since the creation of the National Anthem. Typically, various programs and thematic exhibitions take place at venues such as the Déri Museum, New Town Hall - Csokonai Fórum, Reformed Great Church, DEMKI, and others, allowing people to immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage of Hungary.

The city of Debrecen and the Csokonai National Theater are celebrating the day of Hungarian Culture with a special announcement in 2024. In the evening, they pay tribute to Ferenc Kölcsey, the poet of the National Anthem, with three performances on the 22nd of  January. Exhibition of Fanni Bacskó

Debrecen Zoo opens the year with a Family Day

Family Days will be held on 27th and the 28th of January from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The two-day program offers young and old alike a great opportunity to get a glimpse into the lives of the birds and their exotic relatives that spend the winter here. DVSC legends and Kowalsky and the Vega band are organising a charity soccer gala again in Debrecen
