Exhibition in The Cat Cafe

Macskávézó (Cat Cafe) 1 Cegléd Street, debrecen, Hungary

From the 1st of December, Zsuzsa Aradi's paintings of animals - mainly cats - can be seen in a bunch at the popular Cat Café in Debrecen. The exhibited paintings, which depict animals in different styles and approaches, are among the artist's favourite works. The Cat Cafe hosting the exhibition is also home to ten kittens and is somewhere you can enjoy various drinks and cakes in the company of the purring four-legged friends. At the opening ceremony on the 1st of December, visitors could hear the recitations of poet and performer István B. Orosz and the piano playing of teacher and journalist Péter Nádudvari. The painting appeared in Zsuzsa Aradi's life when she saw the white walls of her family's new home as too barren. She first decorated the rooms with old acrylic paint; then she recreated stairs, doors and smaller pieces of furniture. After a while, she also acquired a few canvases to brighten up the children's room with two or three more colourful pictures, and from then on, painting became her passion. The exhibition of Lajos Bíró (who died in 2010) and his daughter Eszter Biró can be visited in the Theoretical Gallery at the Debrecen Campus site. The fate of painter Lajos Bíró was peculiar: after participating in the 1956 revolution, he was imprisoned for four years. He was only able to do his art at the end of the 1950s, but he was able to start painting regularly again and get involved in local and national artistic life. For 25 years in Debrecen, he managed the work of the Medgyessy Ferenc Fine Arts Circle and Studio and organised the circle's artist camps - to this day, many artists consider him their master - and he was also a painting teacher at the Tokaj artist camp for eleven years. In addition to his landscapes and still lifes, his portrait painting elevated him to the ranks of Debrecen's most important artists. His daughter, Eszter Biró, is also a painter who learned the love of art from her father at an early age: she learned to draw and paint in the Ferenc Medgyessy Fine Arts Circle and considers Lajos Bíró to be her master.
