Exhibition of illustrations for the works of Lőrinc Szabó and János Térey opens
On July 17, 2025, at 6 p.m., the anniversary competition and exhibition inspired by the works of János Térey and Lőrinc Szabó will open in Debrecen, at the Bényi Gallery.
Dr. István Puskás, Deputy Mayor of the City of Debrecen responsible for the cultural area, will give a welcome speech. The exhibition will be opened by art historian Dr. Emese Révész, and illustrator László Herbszt.
This year’s anniversary competition of the Illustration Festival pays tribute to the 125th anniversary of the birth of two artists with many connections to Debrecen, Lőrinc Szabó, and the 55th anniversary of the birth of János Térey.
The aim of the call was to create narrative visual works that reflect on specific literary texts, rethinking and making visible the diversity and innovative power of contemporary Hungarian illustration.
The competition was announced by the Budapest Illustration Festival and Graphifest under the patronage of the city of Debrecen, and an exhibition of the selected works will now be opened in the “cívis” city.
The long-term goal of the organisers is to strengthen the presence of contemporary illustration in the countryside and to regularly involve Hungarian cities in the festival’s events in the future, with Debrecen as the first stop now.
The exhibition is hosted by the Bényi Gallery in the Kölcsey Centre.
The curators of the exhibition are Emese Révész and László Herbszt.
