From the end of March, it will be possible to travel to Malta and Leipzig from Debrecen International Airport.

The first Universal Air flight from Malta arrived in Debrecen on Sunday. Mayor László Papp said, “It is essential to cooperate with a larger number of passengers, new flights, and, if appropriate, new airlines every year.”

From now on, the Maltese airline will operate direct flights twice weekly on the Debrecen-Leipzig and Debrecen-Malta routes.

“Debrecen is a significant city from an economic and cultural perspective. For us, the connections between people, the economy and culture are increasingly important, and it is important to strengthen them further,” the airline’s COO, Christopher Luca, said. The flights will operate on Thursdays and Sundays during the summer season.

“This is a significant day for us, as we connect two cities, Leipzig and Debrecen. This brings our colleagues closer to each other, as well as our cultures. People will come together and enjoy Debrecen and Leipzig and learn more about our new Neue Klasse iX3, which will arrive soon,” the CFO of BMW Manufacturing Hungary Ltd., Eske Herrström, said.

In recent decades, Leipzig has not been accessible by direct flight from Hungary, but now it is possible from Debrecen.”This event, that this plane appeared here today, at this airport, is hopefully just a first step on a longer journey to the success story of Universal Air’s operations in Debrecen. We, the airport, will do everything we can to make this happen,” the CEO of Debrecen International Airport, Ernő Györke, emphasised.

Mayor László Papp stated that, together with the government, they consider the development of Debrecen International Airport to be strategically important. He highlighted that it is essential that they can cooperate with a more significant number of passengers, new flights, and, if appropriate, new airlines every year. László Papp said he is confident that 2025 will be a turning point.

“This year, we can welcome several new airlines to Debrecen Airport. Universal Air is launching two new scheduled flights from Debrecen: one to Leipzig and the other to Malta. One is perhaps related to work and the other to relaxation; however, both destinations are significant to us because they increase the importance of Debrecen Airport within the region,” the mayor pointed out. He announced that a contract will soon be signed, which will deal with the design of the internal transport system of Debrecen International Airport, namely the runway, taxiways and navigation system.

The flight from Malta did not stay long in the city; it soon departed for Leipzig.
