Historic Debrecen home restored through community effort

A locally protected historic building in Debrecen has been beautifully restored at 37 Hatvan Street, thanks to a collaborative effort between the city municipality and the property owners.

Mayor László Papp shared photos of the renovated property on social media, announcing its transformation as part of the city’s commitment to preserving architectural heritage.

Debrecen is home to more than 300 buildings under local protection. In support of their preservation, the city launched the Architectural Heritage Renovation Program, with the first restoration project taking place at the condominium on 10–12 Szent Anna Street.

As previously reported by local media, following a proposal by Chief Architect István Gábor, the Debrecen City Council amended its regulation on the protection of the cityscape during its meeting in late August last year. This led to the inclusion of an additional 23 properties under individual local protection, bringing the total to 330 protected buildings across Debrecen.

During the same council meeting, Mayor Papp specifically highlighted the building at 37 Hatvan Street as one earmarked for restoration using the special municipal fund established to support the rehabilitation of Debrecen’s traditional townhouses, known as “cívis houses.”
