Hundreds of birds welcomed in Hortobágy after the storm

On average, it takes two and a half months to accumulate as many injured animals as in the past six days.

Due to last week’s storms, the Hortobágy Bird Park is full of injured birds, with many arriving from Debrecen.

The Bird Park takes care of an average of two thousand injured birds a year.

After the storms at the beginning of last week, 400 birds waiting for care arrived in 5 days, which is as many as would normally be received in two and a half months.

The more seriously injured birds are recovering in the wards. Most of them suffered fractures. The birds that escaped the storm with minor bruises are already waiting for a full recovery in the aviaries. Among the injured are also songbirds and birds of prey, but most are the protected white storks.

“Most of the birds that arrived at our facility suffered some kind of accidental injury, primarily broken bones. A good part of these can be saved, broken limbs can be restored with surgical methods,” Deputy Director Balázs Déri summarised.
