In Debrecen’s shops, giving is now a joy
Between December 11 and 16, thousands of volunteers are welcoming shoppers’ non‑perishable food donations at designated SPAR stores and all INTERSPAR supermarkets. The campaign, called “Adni Öröm!” (“Giving is Joy!”), is the largest charity initiative of the Hungarian Maltese Charity Service.
The in-person collection phase of the campaign has begun. According to the organizers, the goal is to ensure that the warmth of Christmas reaches even those in the most difficult situations. Shoppers can hand over purchased food items to volunteers after the checkout counters, who will make sure the packages reach families in need before Christmas.
Communication director Tamás Romhányi emphasized, “Every donation counts—from pasta and canned goods to cooking oil and even small sweets—all support is real help.”
This year’s campaign highlights that even a small donated product can bring genuine festive warmth to someone in hardship, because behind every gift lies personal care, often more valuable than the food itself.
The most useful items for families include pasta, rice, canned goods, cooking oil, sugar, flour, baby food, instant soups, allergen‑free products, and small holiday treats. Volunteers sort and pack the donations in the Maltese Charity Service’s warehouses, then deliver them before Christmas to struggling families, the elderly, the sick, and people with limited mobility.
In addition to in-person donations, donation cards are available between November 28 and December 16 at designated SPAR and INTERSPAR stores, in values of HUF 1,000, 3,000, 5,000, and 10,000.
Online donations of any amount are possible at www.adniorom.hu, where the list of participating stores and the short film “Az adomány útja”(“The Journey of a Donation”) can also be found.
