Information on the introduction of EES at Debrecen International Airport
On 12 October 2025, Hungary began the introduction of the European Union’s new, modern border registration system, the EES (Entry/Exit System), at its external borders. This digital system enables the electronic registration of the entry and exit of non-EU citizens, including the recording of passengers’ biometric data (face and fingerprints). The EES replaces the traditional passport stamp, making the process of entering and exiting the EU faster and more secure.
Debrecen International Airport will join the testing of the system between 11 and 13 November 2025, after which full-scale application will begin. Passengers are advised to get informed in advance and arrive at the airport earlier than usual, as biometric data collection may result in a short wait at check-in.
EU citizens and those travelling as EU family members or individuals holding a valid Schengen residence permit or long-term visa are exempt from EES registration.
The new system aims to create a single database of EU external border crossings, thus facilitating border control, improving security, and simplifying travel for frequent border crossers.
The Debrecen International Airport and the Border Policing Department of the Hajdú-Bihar County Police Headquarters are committed to ensuring that the transition proceeds as smoothly as possible. Passengers are kindly asked for their patience and cooperation during this period.
