Large-scale asphalting works have begun on Határ Road

Mayor László Papp and Deputy Mayor and the local government representative of the district Diána Széles reported on the details of the works at a press conference on October 29, 2025.

As László Papp said, 2025 – similarly to previous years – is the year of major road developments, so the city will take advantage of the opportunities of this year to the last minute, as long as the weather permits and construction can be carried out. In the coming weeks – according to plans, by mid-December – large-scale road renovation works will be carried out and completed on a 1.6-kilometre section of Határ Road from Varjútövis Street to the roundabout, worth nearly HUF 200 million, with government support.

As the mayor recalled, at the end of last year and in the spring of this year, a 1.16-kilometre-long section of Határ Road was already repaired with rainwater drainage, canal construction, road renovation and widening, and now the next section is to be renovated. In the case of Határ Road, which is a high-traffic collector road, the section affected by the works that are now starting is also fragmented and cracked, so it is in need of renovation. According to László Papp, the goal of the city government is to make the lives of the people of Debrecen better and more comfortable with such and similar investments and renovations.

Deputy Mayor and the local government representative of the district Diána Széles said in connection with the investment that it is important that not only those working in the industrial area on Határ Road but also those living in the residential area here and in the surrounding farmlands feel more comfortable. Part of this, for example, is the renovation of bus stops as part of the current road renovation, since many people take buses from here to the city center and other areas of the city. Along Határ Road, which has significant traffic, it is also important that the public lighting is of good quality and that the sidewalks are in good condition for safe pedestrian traffic. This year, the roadway and existing sidewalk sections will be repaired on the aforementioned road section, and the construction of the missing sidewalk sections and the development of public lighting will be the task of the municipality next year, using its own resources.

The deputy mayor emphasized that the local government is able to implement its own strong investments in such a way that the city’s economy is getting stronger, as a result of which local tax revenues are growing, and they provide adequate coverage for developments that improve the operating conditions of companies operating in the city and the quality of life of the city’s citizens. The aforementioned previous phase of the renewal of Határ Road and the current phase are worth a total of HUF 825 million, she said adding that as a local government representative of the affected residential area, she often hears from residents that in the last two decades this previously typically rural part of the city has become very urbanized. She added that several roads have been renewed; for example, the Kishegyesi Road, health centers and other public institutions, community spaces, and commercial units have been created. Diána Széles is certain that this process will continue, and the developments will be able to satisfy more and more residential needs.
