László Papp visited Debrecen’s newest sister city, Marosvásárhely
At the invitation of Mayor Zoltán Soós, László Papp visited Marosvásárhely (Târgu Mureș)—as shared on the Facebook page of the Mayor of Debrecen. According to the statement, the aim of the official visit is to further strengthen the relationship between the two cities in the spirit of respect for the past and for the future.
“I trust that the rich cultural heritage of the local Hungarians and the cultural traditions of Debrecen will complement and strengthen each other perfectly!, “states László Papp.
Marosvásárhely is Debrecen’s newest twin city—this was decided at the beginning of the year.
Marosvásárhely is located in Maros County. It is the cultural, industrial, commercial, transport, educational, and intellectual center of the Székelys. The former seat of Marosszék, later of Maros‑Torda County, then of the Hungarian Autonomous Region, today Marosvásárhely is the county seat of Maros and the center of the Marosvásárhely Metropolitan Area. By population, it is the sixteenth largest city in Romania and the sixth largest in Transylvania. Moreover, it is the city with the largest Hungarian community in Romania.
The city extends on both banks of the Maros River, but the center and most of the city districts are located on the left bank of the river.
The city’s main attractions include the city center: the Rose Square with its countless Baroque and Art Nouveau buildings, such as the Church of St. John the Baptist, the famous tower of the Church of the Friends, and the Administrative Palace, or the Palace of Culture. The 17th-century atmosphere is created by the four-bastion castle, with the tower of the Castle Church standing out in the southwest.
Among the countless other attractions of this county seat are monuments of international significance, churches, public buildings, and residential houses in Baroque, Classicist, Neo-Renaissance, Eclectic, and Art Nouveau styles, museums and galleries, as well as a multitude of public sculptures and monuments.
The transformation of Marosvásárhely into a modern economic center is of paramount importance for the city’s future, and Debrecen can help them a lot in this by sharing its experiences of recent years.
