Major Road Repair Works Begin on Szív Street
Large-scale road resurfacing works are under way on Szív Street. The investment was presented on site by Deputy Mayor Diána Széles and Aurélia Ibolya Orosz, city councillor for the area, on 16 March 2026.
As Diána Széles explained, the municipality intends to allocate approximately HUF 1 billion in the near future to large-scale road repairs across a total of 32 locations selected based on residents’ proposals communicated by city councillors. In several cases, these works have already begun. Citizens of the city continuously approach their councillors with comments and requests regarding the condition of roads, and councillors – including Aurélia Ibolya Orosz – relay these to the city leadership, who assist in resolving the reported issues.
Recently, the municipality had the section of Barna Street between Antall József Street and Szív Street refurbished. Now the time has come for the complete renewal of the road surface of Szív Street between Miklós Street and Erzsébet Street, over a length of more than 250 metres. This will significantly ease car access to the popular Boldogfalva Kindergarten, which has had an organised car park for several years, and will also greatly facilitate through traffic along the street for many people. Currently, milling of the wearing course is under way on Szív Street, to be followed by the adjustment of utility fixtures to level, the installation of drainage inlets, and later the laying of a new asphalt layer. According to current plans, the total gross cost of the investment will be approximately HUF 75 million.
The Deputy Mayor highlighted that large-scale road repairs carried out across the city primarily aim to ensure that residents of Debrecen can travel in more civilised and comfortable conditions, making the city more liveable, while also providing an opportunity to address problems caused by winter conditions that lead to potholes.
Diána Széles emphasised that, as a result of the conscious economic development work carried out over the past decade, the municipality is able to allocate significant own resources to such investments, as the local business tax paid by companies operating and established in Debrecen – which constitutes a decisive part of the city’s local tax revenue – is providing an increasingly substantial source of funding.
Aurélia Ibolya Orosz, city councillor for the area, expressed her satisfaction that the requests of residents in the neighbourhood have been fulfilled and that this long-awaited road refurbishment could begin. In recent years, numerous developments and construction projects aimed at making the district more liveable have taken place in the area; however, the associated vehicle traffic has also placed additional strain on the road surface of Szív Street. Therefore, the refurbishment is particularly timely. The councillor also noted that, depending on weather conditions, the contractor may complete the works as early as the first weeks of April.
