Malompark announces start date for paid parking
Parking fees will be charged in the Malompark parking lot from September 8, the operator announced. Previously, it was planned to charge for parking from August 1, but this was delayed for technical reasons. The machines have been installed in recent days, so there is no longer any obstacle to the change.
The shopping center justified the change by saying that the parking lot is significantly under pressure due to the introduction of the surrounding paid zone and that more and more drivers who are not shopping are using the parking lot. They wrote that they want the parking spaces to be accessible to customers.
Malompark has released its parking tariff system, reflecting a more flexible approach compared to its initial plans.
Originally, the plan was to offer all visitors 90 minutes of discounted parking for HUF 480. However, the updated pricing structure now provides the first hour at a reduced rate of HUF 240, aimed at benefiting store customers, while each additional hour will cost HUF 480.
Parking fees will apply on weekdays between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., while parking remains free on weekends.
When contacted by Dehir, Operations Director József Sipos also stated that since the new parking system was launched in Debrecen, according to their experience, the proportion of vehicle users who use our parking spaces not for shopping purposes but as a free P+R (Park and Ride) option has increased, making it even more justified to introduce the paid system there.
He noted that the initial days will serve as a grace period. During this time, if a vehicle is found parked improperly or without payment, an informational notice will be placed on the windshield. The notice will remind the driver that the area is a paid parking zone and encourage compliance with the parking regulations to avoid future charges.
József Sipos emphasizes that the shopping center is privately owned property. In terms of its nature, it is a commercial facility, the purpose and activity of which is to serve tenants and customers. The entire external traffic and parking areas, established by the owner as private areas open to public traffic, also serve these purposes. The shopping center’s parking lots are not part of the narrow and wider urban public areas, which is why the 4027 parking zone will be introduced in the shopping center parking lot, and city parking passes are not valid there.
Mayor László Papp said at the last general meeting that he had initiated with the managers of Malompark to at least include the parking lot in the city’s ticket system, meaning that if someone has a pass, they can use this parking lot for free. He said that he does not see his proposal being incorporated into the Malompark parking system for the time being.
József Sipos responded by saying that László Papp’s initiative “would have certain advantages, but having decided to retain the provision over the facility’s traffic and parking lots, it was not subject to further joint evaluation and acceptance.”
