MODEM’s Time Mimicry Wins Exhibition of the Year Award
At this year’s Exhibition of the Year Award ceremony held at the Hungarian Money Museum and Visitor Centre earlier today, MODEM Centre for Modern and Contemporary Arts was recognised in the HUF sub-10 million category for its temporary exhibition titled Time Mimicry. According to the judges, the exhibition creates a creative, witty and clearly structured visual dialogue, bringing together fine and applied arts, graphic art, design and fashion, as well as the past and the present, in an engaging way.
The exhibitions shortlisted for the award are not merely outstanding professional achievements, but also signposts “showing how Hungary’s museum professionals think about exhibitions, the choice of subject matter, social responsibility, community involvement, storytelling and the transfer of knowledge”, said Zsuzsa Kalla, Deputy State Secretary at the Ministry for Social Relations and Culture, in her speech at the ceremony. She added that no museum today can be content simply to preserve and present the past but must ask questions, establish connections, initiate dialogue and give visitors the opportunity to view history from the perspective of their own lives and times.
“The Exhibition of the Year Award has been presented since 2010 by the Pulszky Society – Hungarian Museum Association, with 19 entries submitted in response to this year’s call for applications,” said Ibolya Bereczki, the association’s president. She highlighted the constant changes taking place in the museum sector, in exhibitions themselves, in the messages they convey and in the methods used to communicate them. The diversity of this year’s entries was further evidence of these changes. The award aims to recognise innovation in museum exhibitions, their ability to engage and communicate with audiences, as well as their scholarly grounding and creativity, the ceremony heard.
Júlia Katona, chair of the judging panel, explained that nine entries were received in the category for exhibitions costing less than HUF 10 million to produce, and ten in the category above that threshold. No institutions entered the virtual exhibition category this year. In addition to the main prizes in the two categories, the jury also presented special awards and certificates of commendation.
