Modern Truck Terminal to Relieve Debrecen’s Road Network Soon
Construction of the Debrecen Logistics and Truck Terminal is set to begin in the Northwestern Economic Zone. The ceremonial laying of the foundation stone for the HUF 4.7 billion investment took place on Wednesday. According to expectations, the development will relieve the city’s inner roads of truck traffic, make factory operations more predictable and stable, while providing a civilised environment for drivers.
The terminal will be developed on an area of approximately 9 hectares and will be capable of accommodating 260 trucks to European standards.
All three of the city’s industrial parks will be easily accessible from here via the M35 motorway within a maximum of 10 minutes, and the truck terminal will also be able to serve transit traffic on the motorway.
“The truck park will significantly improve the efficiency of logistics and supplier processes, while making factory operations more predictable and stable. Well-organised waiting and service conditions will facilitate the smooth flow of goods, supporting continuous production, precise scheduling of deliveries, and compliance with international logistics requirements,” said Ferenc Kun, Managing Director of Debreceni Ingatlanfejlesztő Kft.
The comfort of arriving drivers will be ensured by sanitary and resting facilities, as well as dining areas. Deputy Mayor Lajos Barcsa stated that when the decision was made on the location of the BMW factory, the city leadership had already resolved to create a complete ecosystem that would have an impact on the whole of Debrecen. “Fewer trucks in the city, less congestion, less noise. Safer roads for families and a cleaner, more liveable environment. This development moves a large number of trucks to the outskirts of the city and gives the streets back to the people of Debrecen,” he said.
More than 44,000 square metres of basalt concrete and over 6,000 square metres of asphalt surfacing will be constructed, with rainwater drained by 3,800 metres of stormwater channels. Two irrigation water reservoirs, each with a capacity of 150 cubic metres, will be created to water green areas. An intermodal rail terminal is located nearby, where a customs office will be established for trucks arriving for customs clearance.
“The nearby intermodal rail terminal will open up new opportunities for combined freight transport, strengthening Debrecen’s role in both rail and road logistics. The new customs office will also ensure that traffic arriving for customs clearance does not burden the city centre,” said Mayor László Papp.
Debrecen is at the focus of government activity, and it is important to make the most of the city’s potential, sa stated by Zoltán Nyul, Deputy State Secretary for high-rise investments, at the ceremony. He emphasised that infrastructure must be aligned with what brings the greatest benefit to people living in the region. “It is very important that these facilities are not built for the short term, therefore operational considerations must always be given maximum priority, as the coming decades will be about how we can keep the operating costs of such a facility, or even a larger complex, as low as possible, while maximising the exploitation of its fundamental economic potential,” he said.
With the placement of a time capsule as part of the foundation stone ceremony, the investment officially begins, and according to plans it will be completed in the first half of 2027, financed by HUF 4.7 billion in state and European Union funding.
