More Smart Crosswalks and Road Improvements Coming to Debrecen

Smart crosswalks, road repairs, car park refurbishments and green space developments are just some of the investments recently completed or planned for the Vénkert and Hatvan Street district.

A fitness park has recently been created next to the playground on Kiss Ernő Street, and a table tennis table and a bench have also been installed.

“We are very pleased with this area, as we have five children, and the younger ones can play while we can also spend time with the older ones. This way, everyone can play and be active at their own pace at the same time,” said Anna Márta Bíró, highlighting the opportunities provided for her family.

Numerous road development works are planned in the district, including the repair of the pavement on Dorottya Street. The section of Halastó Street between Diófa Street and Vág Street will be paved with block paving, which will support the daily transport of residents. This is the largest investment, to be implemented at a cost of more than HUF 70 million.

“The section of Halastó Street between Diófa Street and Vág Street is a connecting road approximately three and a half to four metres wide. Large asphalt-laying machines cannot access this area, so in cooperation with the designer we are applying a technical solution by installing block paving to provide a solid surface,” emphasised Zsombor Gábor, Head of City Operations.

On Sinai Miklós Street, the circular parking section next to Vénkerti Primary School will receive a new asphalt layer, and part of the car park will also be refurbished. In addition, the pavement sections in front of the German Primary School and Vénkerti Primary School will also be renewed, with block paving to be installed.

Debrecen’s first smart crosswalk was installed ten years ago, and now three more will be added in the northern and western parts of the city, for example near Bartók Béla Street.

“This is important because Lilla Square Primary School is located just a few dozen metres away. The headteacher of the institution also requested that the crosswalk be made even safer if possible. It was previously equipped with a red warning signal, and with this development we can now provide even greater safety,” said Deputy Mayor Lajos Barcsa.

In addition to transport developments, other investments will also be implemented. For example, the tomb and surroundings of Csokonai will be renewed, while at the Vénkert local market the covers of the stalls will be repaired and access to water will also be provided.
