National ranking released — Debrecen grammar school among the best

HVG (Hungarian weekly magazine focused on economics, politics, and society) has compiled its grammar school rankings again this year. The 2026 ranking also took into account the results of the institution’s students in competency assessments, but the students’ performance in mathematics, Hungarian, history and language exams, as well as the graduates’ admission results, also mattered.

Several rural grammar schools are in the top twenty list: Lovassy László Grammar School in Veszprém is in sixth place, and Kazinczy Ferenc Grammar School and Dormitory in Győr is in tenth.

Last year, on the 2025 list, Debrecen’s Fazekas Mihály Grammar School was 13th, and the institution is also on this year’s list; this time, they improved one position: they are now in 12th place.

But the ELTE Bolyai János Practice Grammar School in Szombathely, the Révai Miklós Grammar School in Győr, and the Illyés Gyula Grammar School in Budaörs also made it into the top 20.

Here is the top 15 list:

ELTE Radnóti Miklós Preparatory Elementary School and Preparatory Grammar School, Budapest

V. District Eötvös József Grammar School, Budapest

I. District Toldy Ferenc Grammar School, Budapest

VII. District Madách Imre Grammar School, Budapest

Lovassy László Grammar School, Veszprém

ELTE Trefort Ágoston Practical Grammar School,Budapest

Fazekas Mihály Practical Grammar School, Budapest

Szent István Grammar School, Budapest

Kazinczy Ferenc Grammar School and Dormitory, Győr

ELTE Apáczai János Csere Practical Grammar School and Dormitory

Városmajor Grammar School, Budapest

Fazekas Mihály Grammar School, Debrecen

Karinthy Frigyes Grammar School, Budapest

Veres Pálné Grammar School, Budapest

ELTE Bolyai János Practice Primary School and Secondary School, Szombathely

As the HVG notes, there is no real substantive difference between the top performers; only small differences determine the specific positions in their cases, as their students provide balanced performance, both in the secondary rankings of the graduation exam, and they perform very well in the competency assessment results.
