New airline and two new destinations at Debrecen International Airport

The Municipality of Debrecen welcomes the announcement that Universal Air will operate two return flights a week on the Debrecen-Leipzig and Debrecen-Malta routes from Debrecen International Airport from the 30th of March 2025.

The new airline and the two flights will further boost leisure and business tourism in Debrecen. They will allow air traffic to resume the dynamic growth that characterised the airport’s traffic before the coronavirus epidemic.

The Municipality of Debrecen is working with its partners to add more destinations to the Debrecen International Airport’s offering.

The city’s tourism had a peak year in 2024. In 2024, more than 690 thousand guest nights were spent in Debrecen. The number of guests increased by 10 percent and the number of guest nights by 19 percent compared to 2023. The share of nights spent by domestic guests was 51%, and 49% by foreign guests. The number of foreign guests exceeded 234 thousand. Tourists are attracted by the quality of the city’s services, its cultural offer, the Great Forest, the historic city centre, the Great Forest strand, the adventure and thermal baths, and the Sziget-kék-themed playground for children.

Debrecen’s extremely diverse range of events and programmes, as well as international sporting events such as the Olympic qualification competitions, the European Women’s Handball Championship matches, the European University Games, as well as the growing business and conference tourism, and the professional work of VisitDebrecen, play a significant role in this success. Tourism is vital in Debrecen’s economy: hundreds of businesses operate in this sector, employing thousands of people.
