New Pacemaker Technology Used for First Time Across Hungary in Debrecen

A new device has been used for the first time in Hungary during a conduction system pacing pacemaker implantation at the Department of Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery of the University of Debrecen Clinical Centre, unideb.hu reports.

According to the announcement, the innovative device enables doctors performing the procedure to monitor the heart’s electrical activity in real time and use measurements to check pacing parameters, thereby helping them position the electrode as accurately as possible. The first procedures using the device were carried out at the department in recent days and were followed via live broadcast by specialists from medical institutions across Hungary.

Pacemaker implantation is essential in the treatment of many types of cardiac arrhythmia. Between 600 and 700 implantable electronic devices are fitted every year at the University of Debrecen Clinical Centre’s Department of Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery. Alongside conventional procedures, modern pacemaker therapies that activate the heart’s natural conduction system are playing an increasingly important role. One of the key directions in this field is to ensure that, while maintaining an appropriate heart rate, the heart’s electrical activation retains as much of its natural, physiological character as possible.

The MicroPace OneStim is a specialised cardiac pacing and measurement system, delivering electrical impulses while displaying and analysing the heart’s electrical signals, including abnormalities visible on the electrocardiogram (ECG), during pacemaker implantation. The device continuously monitors changes in the electrical resistance associated with pacing, helping doctors compare different electrode positions. In addition to its compact design, a particular advantage is that it has been developed specifically to support conduction system pacing pacemaker implantations.

“The device provides immediate feedback to the doctors performing the procedure by simultaneously assessing ECG signals and pacing parameters. This makes it easier to evaluate different electrode positions and helps verify whether the pacing is producing the desired electrical response,” said László Nagy, senior lecturer and specialist at the Department of Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery.

Specialists in Debrecen were the first in Hungary to use the MicroPace OneStim device during conduction system pacing pacemaker implantations. The operations were also followed via live broadcast by interested professionals at several medical institutions across the country. Commenting on the procedures, Judit Barta, Head of the University of Debrecen’s Department of Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery, emphasised that the use of MicroPace OneStim is another example of the department’s active involvement in introducing emerging cardiology technologies in Hungary.

The department is committed to providing high-quality patient care, applying state-of-the-art cardiological procedures and promoting professional innovation. Specialists stress that further experience and follow-up data will be needed to assess the long-term clinical benefits of conduction system pacing; nevertheless, it offers an important opportunity to tailor pacemaker therapy as closely as possible to the heart’s natural functioning.
