New parking system to launch later than planned
The Debrecen City Council made several amendments during its Thursday session to the parking regulations originally passed in November last year—the original plan aimed to introduce a zoned parking system not citywide from July 1, 2025.
The new parking system aims to make parking easier and cost-free near home for residents living in paid zones, encourage greater use of local and regional public transportation and reduce growing traffic pressure in the city centre and downtown areas.
The new parking system also means that many areas where parking was previously free will now require payment.
The changes were pushed by residents who found it increasingly difficult to park near their homes.
According to the Thursday decision of the Debrecen City Council :
- – The regulation will now take effect on August 1, 2025, instead of July 1,
- – For free residential parking, only the address on the official address card will be required for registration— the address on the vehicle registration document no longer needs to match,
- – Residents using company-owned cars (under 3.5 tons) assigned exclusively to them may also park for free near their residence, provided they present proof from their employer. This applies to up to 2 individuals per address, each with one car,
- – Childcare centres, kindergartens, and elementary schools: spaces within 25 meters of their main entrances remain free between 8:00 and 8:30 AM on school days,
- – There will be no parking fees on Saturdays in the green zone,
- – Monthly, quarterly, or half-year pass holders will get their passes extended by one month. Those who purchased valid passes for July but don’t want to use them for August will receive a refund from DV Parking Ltd.
In the second phase of implementation, residents in newly added streets have already been able to register for free residential parking on the DV Parking website, with nearly 5,000 registrations submitted so far.
