The settlement study plan for the Kishatár Street block was approved by the Debrecen assembly on Thursday. According to this plan, an OBI DIY store would be built on the site behind the current XXL Lutz department store, at the roundabout.

According to dehir.hu’s understanding OBI was already thinking about expanding in Debrecen six years ago. At one time, they were interested in the location of the closed Baumax with a similar profile, but in the end they did not buy it. The Möbelix furniture store later opened in Baumax’s place.

With the closure of Baumax in 2015, only one large international DIY chain, Praktiker, remained in Debrecen. This is quite surprising given the population. For example, Békéscsaba with a population of 60,000, Szolnok with a population of 71,000, Kecskemét with a population of 110,000, and Nyíregyháza with a population of 117,000 have both OBI and Praktiker.

Now it seems that OBI has realised this and is building their store in Debrecen.

The plot is 23,600 square meters, and more than 250 parking spaces would be created next to the store.

Part of the required 25 percent green area will be lawns, shrubs, and wooded areas, which will be supplemented by green lanes between parking lots.

Chief Architect István Gábor assessed that the documents submitted to the general assembly, based on the currently available information, are in line with the city’s settlement development and settlement planning goals, the zoning regulations, and the requirements for the provision of settlement green infrastructure.

The chief architect’s proposal was unanimously supported by the representatives of the Debrecen local government.
