Phase I of connecting Main Road 354 and Main Road 33 is underway
Phase I of the connection between main road 354 and main road 33 is under construction.
On 17 December 2025, Mayor László Papp of Debrecen, Deputy Mayor Lajos Barcsa, and local municipal representatives Erzsébet Katona and Róbert Juráskó visited the site to review progress.
As Mayor László Papp explained, 2025 is a major year for transport developments in Debrecen. The city’s transport system is continuously evolving in two directions: increasing the capacity of existing roads and junctions, and creating new routes and transport corridors. The current project belongs to the latter category. The development of Domokos Márton Street began in 2019, extending northwards from Main Road 33 to the Vezér Street junction. It was already known at that time that the project would need to continue, as the transport network of this district can only be complete once the entire section connecting Main Road 33 with Main Road 354—the city’s northern bypass—is finished.
Among the road developments launched in Debrecen in 2025, this is the most complex and likely the largest investment. With the support of the Government of Hungary, a 1.5‑kilometre road section equipped with an overpass—creating a grade‑separated junction—is being built at a gross cost of HUF 8.2 billion. This new section will connect Main Road 354 to Domokos Márton Street. The route will play a major role in the life of the city’s northern area, as it is intended to create a new transport corridor between the M35 motorway and Böszörményi Road, significantly reducing traffic pressure on Böszörményi Road. The mayor added that the new road will also ease traffic for residents of Vezér Street, as it will provide direct access to the university’s innovation park, allowing traffic heading there to bypass Vezér Street. Construction is progressing well, with completion scheduled for November 2026, though there is hope it may be finished earlier.
Deputy Mayor Lajos Barcsa highlighted that residents of the Józsa and Nyulas districts are eagerly awaiting the completion of this project. For those commuting by car from these areas—especially from Józsa—to the city centre, the new road will offer an additional transport alternative. Domokos Márton Street will become a third route between the M35 motorway and Böszörményi Road. At the same time, through‑traffic and drivers heading to the western parts of the city will no longer need to burden Böszörményi Road.
Public transport access to the city centre will also become faster for residents of Józsa and Kismacs. The deputy mayor also noted that while only a few industrial facilities existed near Vezér Street a few years ago, their number has since increased, and the University of Debrecen has carried out several developments in the area. Plans also include the construction of the collection centre of the Hungarian Natural History Museum near Domokos Márton Street. Many future facilities in this part of the city will rely on the new road section, which will allow residents to travel more safely, comfortably, and efficiently.
Municipal representative Erzsébet Katona stressed that this investment is extremely important for the residents of her district. When the first section of the road was completed, it was used by only a few people, but over time traffic increased significantly, making the district more accessible. The area is also affected by the reconstruction of the Csigekert Street – Balmazújvárosi Road – Szabó Lőrinc Street – Füredi Road junction, considered the “gateway” to the district. This makes the area one of the most significant in Debrecen in terms of transport infrastructure development. She also emphasized the importance of reducing traffic on Vezér Street, especially so that residents can enjoy the Vezér Street lake—created as part of the Civaqua programme—for recreation in more pleasant conditions. Although simultaneous roadworks across the city often cause temporary congestion, she asked road users to remain patient, as these developments ultimately aim to make daily travel easier.
Municipal representative Róbert Juráskó added that residents have long awaited this investment, as congestion on Böszörményi Road poses a serious problem for those arriving from Józsa. The new road will allow traffic to be distributed across parallel routes, greatly helping not only residents of Józsa, but also those in Nyulas and along Vezér Street. He also noted that a new motorway exit will further ease traffic flow. Domokos Márton Street could even be extended as far as Józsa and the local business areas, creating yet another opportunity to improve traffic heading toward Debrecen. According to municipal the representative, the long‑term solution will be the expansion of Main Road 35 to four lanes, a project currently in the planning phase, along with the northern bypass road for Józsa. He believes that once these planned developments are completed, the transport problems of the northern districts will be resolved.
