Preparation for Heavy Snowfall and Freezing Rain
According to the weather forecast, from 5 January 2026 heavy snowfall and freezing rain are expected in the Debrecen area, which may continue—with varying intensity—until 8 January (Thursday).
The weather front bringing a significant amount of snow is expected to reach the city on Monday, 5 January, between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m.
In view of the expected winter weather, the municipality has ordered preventive measures in cooperation with the contracted companies responsible for winter road maintenance.
During the night of 4 January and the early morning hours of 5 January, AKSD Városgazdálkodási Kft. will carry out salt spreading with a total of eight large machines on residential service roads and smaller suburban roads to prevent icing. On Monday, 5 January, during the daytime, AKSD will perform pre‑salting on public transport routes and major collector roads.
DEKERT Nonprofit Kft. will use manual labour to de-ice and clear snow from sidewalks and pedestrian crossings, while UNISZOL Zrt., as a preventive measure, will begin spreading material on sidewalks and pedestrian crossings already this evening using eight small spreading–pushing machines to ensure safe pedestrian movement.
The municipality asks residents to use their vehicles during snowfall only if absolutely necessary. Drivers are requested to prepare for winter road conditions (proper winter tyres, sufficient fuel, winter equipment) and to drive carefully, with increased attention, in accordance with the changed road and visibility conditions.
The municipality and the cooperating companies continuously monitor the weather situation and will do everything possible to maintain traffic safety and the city’s operability.
