More than 17,000 students will be able to travel free on local public transport (DKV) from 1st April. Registration for the Junior Debrecen City Card started on 5th of February.

According to Mayor of Debrecen László Papp, the city’s economic development has led to the introduction of free travel concessions for children under 14 and over 6 years old. This is a significant support and help for the families of students studying in Debrecen. “For us, the children of Debrecen always come first, but it is important that students who choose Debrecen also feel at home here, so we are making this travel discount available to all students attending an educational institution in Debrecen,” the mayor added.

He said that agreements had been concluded with 20 educational institutions and that a total of 17,378 students would be eligible for the benefit.

The registration platform was launched on the 5th of February, through which parents can register in a few steps. Only two pieces of information (OM ID and date of birth) are required.

Starting from the second half of March, Junior Debrecen City Cards will be distributed to children and students in Debrecen, which will allow them to travel free of charge, the mayor said, adding that early registration is needed to personalise, produce and distribute the cards.

Registration is ongoing and parents do not have to pay for the plastic cards.

“The Debrecen City Card was launched in 2020, and since then more than 20,000 people have redeemed it, including 2,000 children. They don’t need to apply for a new city card,” the mayor pointed out. He noted that, in addition to the free travel starting from the 1st of April, a very extensive system of discounts is linked to the use of the card. The city card offers discounts to many restaurants, cafés and nightclubs, as well as a discount at the zoo and the Aquaticum.
