Relief Sculpture and Ceremonial Hall Dedicated to Charles IV Inaugurated at University of Debrecen’s Clinical Centre

On 23 October 1918, Charles IV inaugurated the main building of the clinic; from now on, its ceremonial hall bears the name of the last King of Hungary, while his memory is preserved by a relief and a commemorative plaque.

Rector Zoltán Szilvássy said that the king visited Debrecen on the occasion of the final official event of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. “This was the root” where the University of Debrecen began, and it has since grown into the largest higher education institution in the country”, he pointed out.

Eilika Habsburg said it is of symbolic significance that the king’s final public appearance as a sovereign ruler was connected to science, education, and peaceful development.

In his inaugural speech, Chancellor and appointed Rector Zoltán Bács emphasised that it was during the era of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy that saw the emergence of a political and cultural space which would enable Debrecen—until then known primarily as a centre of Reformed intellectual life—to attain true university status. He added that Debrecen’s development, the establishment of the university and the creation of the clinical system are all part of a shared historical heritage shaped jointly by Hungarians and Austrians. “The figure of Charles IV also symbolises a kind of transition in this story: the end of one era, but at the same time the beginning of a new outlook. He was already thinking in terms of a Europe in which peace and cooperation are not constraints but objectives,” Zoltán Bács stressed, noting that this idea is particularly relevant in Debrecen today. The appointed Rector of the university, who will take office on 1 May, said that by naming the hall they also reaffirm the tradition of Central European cooperation and the cross-border nature of knowledge, as well as the belief that a shared future can be built from a shared past.

Following the commemorations, the king’s relief and a plaque commemorating his visit to Debrecen were unveiled in the foyer of the ceremonial hall named after Charles IV.
