Safer Traffic, Renovated Streets and Community Spaces – Further District Developments in Debrecen

Developments planned for this year have begun in the Vénkert and Hatvan Street Garden districts of Debrecen.

A smart pedestrian crossing has been completed, pavement sections have been renewed, and public spaces have been expanded with new community functions to support residents’ everyday lives. This year’s investments aim to improve traffic safety, create a more liveable urban environment, and deliver developments that respond to residents’ needs.

During a site visit, Deputy Mayor Lajos Barcsa presented several completed and ongoing developments. He emphasised that progress is proceeding well in proportion to the time elapsed this year, and that a number of projects have already been delivered which directly improve everyday transport and the quality of life of local residents.

During the site visit, Deputy Mayor Lajos Barcsa presented several completed and ongoing development projects. He emphasized that, relative to the time of year, the projects are progressing well, and numerous developments have been implemented that directly improve daily traffic and the quality of life for local residents.

The first stop on the visit was the intersection of Vág Street and Bartók Béla Street, where a new smart crosswalk has been installed. The deputy mayor explained that the LED warning system built into the asphalt helps drivers detect pedestrians, thereby increasing safety. He emphasized that the improvement is particularly important due to the nearby Lilla Square Elementary School, and added that similar solutions are being implemented at several locations throughout the city, including on Pallagi Road and at the intersection of Hadházi Road and Laktanya Street.

The sidewalk on Dorottya Street has been renovated in two sections; it was in poor condition and had become nearly unusable in some places. The deputy mayor noted that the municipality is continuously carrying out renovations, but emphasized that during construction, both contractors and residents must take care to preserve the condition of public spaces. The area surrounding the Csokonai memorial in the same neighborhood is also being revitalized: the landscaping has already been completed, and the memorial will be renovated and new benches installed in the near future.

A significant transport development is set to begin on Halastó Street, where the section between Diófa Street and Vág Street will receive a proper road surface. The Deputy Mayor highlighted that this investment will allow residents to reach the city centre entirely via solid-surfaced roads, avoiding the current dusty section. Zsombor Gábor, Head of the City Operations Department, added that due to the narrow cross-section, the road will be constructed using a specialised technical solution, featuring block paving and a closed stormwater drainage system.

A major transportation improvement project is set to begin on Halastó Street, where the section between Diófa and Vág Streets will be paved. The deputy mayor emphasized that this project will allow residents to reach the city center via a paved road, bypassing the current dusty section. Zsombor Gábor, head of the city operations department, added that due to the narrow cross-section, the road construction here will be carried out using a special technical solution involving cobblestone paving and a closed stormwater drainage system.

Several developments are also underway in the Vénkert district. On a roughly 150-meter section of Sinai Miklós Street, the entire road structure will be replaced and repaved, which will also affect parking lots and traffic within the housing estate. The deputy mayor emphasized that this section is an important connecting route that plays a key role in the internal traffic of the housing estate.

The sidewalk section in front of Vénkerti Elementary School and the Debrecen German Elementary Schools will also be renovated, where the existing asphalt pavement will be gradually replaced with cobblestones. The city administration’s goal is to enable students and pedestrians to move about in a safer, more organized environment on a connecting sidewalk that links multiple points in the neighborhood.

Development of the Vénkerti small market is also continuing: in addition to renovating the canopy structure, water access will be provided for vendors, thereby improving the market’s operating conditions.

The playground and green space on Kiss Ernő Street have also been expanded with new features. The deputy mayor recalled that the area was originally developed around 2015 to meet the needs of young families, and now—in response to feedback from residents—it has been enhanced with sports facilities. A ping-pong table, a fitness park, and new benches have been installed, transforming the area into an attractive community space not only for families with young children but also for older youth.

Among the ongoing projects, the renovation of the intersection of Füredi Road, Csigekert Street, and Szabó Lőrinc Street was also mentioned. The deputy mayor explained that the project is being carried out as part of a state-funded initiative; officially, the work is expected to be completed by mid-summer, though they are confident that the new intersection will be partially operational by the end of spring.

Zsombor Gábor, head of the city operations department, emphasized that following the approval of the 2026 budget, the necessary purchases have been made, and thanks to favorable weather, hot-mix asphalt road and sidewalk renovation work has already begun at several locations in Debrecen.
