Schaeffler Sponsors University of Debrecen’s Formula Student Team
Students at the University of Debrecen will soon complete a car for the Formula Student international engineering competition.
The team was established in 2025 by students from the faculties of engineering, IT and economics. During the competition, they must present their technical, financial and business plan, alongside delivering a high-performance racing car.
A motorsport division has existed at the university for years, and Chancellor Zoltán Bács noted that the city’s industrial growth makes this focus even more relevant. “The development seen over the past 10–12 years in technical education, particularly within the Faculty of Engineering and vehicle-related programmes, has naturally led us to the point where we can now announce a Formula One-level team,” he said.
The university’s car is being built with sponsor support, with Schaeffler Debrecen as a key partner, reflecting the company’s strong commitment to training future professionals.
“It is very important for us to work with young people, especially those from technological and engineering backgrounds. We always support projects like this and contribute together with our own employees,” said Managing Director Péter Szabó.
Students can test their knowledge in a real-world environment, gaining marketable skills and building valuable professional connections by the end of the competition.
Deputy Mayor Lajos Barcsa highlighted that the city’s success is based on cooperation, and Formula Student is another example of how local companies support young talent. With the knowledge gained, participants can even pursue international careers while staying in Debrecen. “In terms of electromobility, whose ecosystem has developed significantly in Debrecen in recent years, it is important that companies not only produce but also innovate, research and develop. Supporting a Formula Student race car is an important step in this,” he added.
Around 3,000 young people will compete during the week-long event. The competition will take place in 2027, and the winning vehicle will be the one that can cover the greatest distance using the least amount of energy.Source and photo credit: dehir.hu
