Science Comes Up Close in Debrecen with Arrival of MTA’s Interactive Travelling Exhibition

The interactive travelling exhibition MTA 200 – Science in Motion has arrived in Debrecen, launched last year by the Science-Friendly Communities Movement to mark the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Its aim is to bring the diverse and fascinating world of science to life and make it more accessible, while also bringing the Academy closer to local communities.

The exhibition is located in front of the main building of the University of Debrecen, meaning that thousands of pupils, university students and passers-by can encounter different fields of science every day. “Thanks to its proximity to the university, secondary schools and primary schools, as well as its location near a busy transport hub, this site is easily accessible to everyone, allowing many people to visit the exhibition,” said György Balla, President of the Debrecen Regional Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

At the opening of the exhibition, Mayor László Papp spoke about how the Debrecen Regional Committee of the Academy and the scientific activity associated with it are among the city’s greatest assets. As he said, the University of Debrecen, the regional committee and local scientific research communities not only keep pace with change, but also help shape it. “Knowledge has become more important than ever and has turned into a strategic resource. Competitiveness, innovation and economic growth all depend to a great extent on the performance of scientific research communities and higher education. However, it is at least equally important to consider how these institutions can share knowledge and bring it closer to the general public,” Mayor László Papp emphasised.

In his speech, Ferenc Kun, President for Science at the University of Debrecen, highlighted that one of the most important messages of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences’ 200th anniversary is the continuity of science. “Individual discoveries require exceptional personal achievement, but it is the cumulative work of scientific schools and research communities, debates, and successive generations of mentors and students that makes these achievements truly enduring,” added Ferenc Kun, President for Science at the University of Debrecen.

The MTA 200 – Science in Motion exhibition can be visited until the end of October in the area in front of the main building of the University of Debrecen.
