Seeking designer for the collection center of the Hungarian Natural History Museum
On Monday, the site visit was held for those who were invited to the design competition for the collection center of the Hungarian Natural History Museum after the pre-qualification stage.
Deputy Mayor Lajos Barcsa shared on his Facebook page, “This is not only important because of scientific research, but also because we are giving future generations a heritage to preserve. The development to be implemented in the University Innovation Industrial Park offers a unique opportunity for representatives of the university and the museum to work in closer cooperation.”
As is known, the international design competition for the exhibition building of the Hungarian Natural History Museum closed in March, and the winner was the joint entry of the world-famous Danish Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) and Vikár és Lukács Építész Stúdió Kft. The exhibition building will be constructed in the Great Forest, on the site of the former Loki Stadium, on Oláh Gábor Street.
The collection center will be located on the western side of the city, in the University Innovation Industrial Park.
This was justified by the fact that while the exhibition building to be built in the Great Forest maintains a close connection with the natural environment free from human intervention, the collection center fits into the scientific ecosystem of the University of Debrecen.
The facility will be a modern alternative to the museum’s current, infrastructurally outdated warehouses and research units operating at several locations. With a net floor area of 43 thousand square meters, the new building will house libraries, research laboratories, offices, lecture halls, and community spaces in addition to collection warehouses and workshops.
Designers are expected to come up with forward-looking, carefully crafted, functional architectural solutions that simultaneously reflect the spirit of scientific innovation and respect for nature. The evaluation of the entries will focus on high-level service to scientific needs, protection of artifacts, and the harmony of sustainability and aesthetic quality.
According to the competition website, applications will be accepted until November 27, and the results will be announced on January 30.
